Parathyroid imaging plays an important role in the evaluation and management of patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. Since primary hyperparathyroidism is caused by 1 abnormal gland in more than 90% of cases, identifying the abnormal gland prior to surgery greatly facilitates preoperative planning and gives your surgeon a “road map” to conduct the operation. The three most commonly performed parathyroid imaging studies include ultrasonography, sestamibi scanning and more recently parathyroid CT scanning.
