Dr William B. Inabnet III, the Eugene W. Friedman Professor of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and Chairman of Surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. Dr Inabnet is the inaugural Director of Endocrine Surgery Quality for the Mount Sinai Health System.
Dr Inabnet attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in his home state where he received his undergraduate and medical school education. He completed his residency in general surgery at Rush-Presbyterian-St Luke’s Medical Center and Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. Dr Inabnet then completed a 1-year clinical fellowship in endocrine surgery at Cochin Hospital in Paris, France where he was trained under world renown surgeon Professor Yves Chapuis in minimally invasive thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery during the advent of laparoscopic surgery. Professor Chapuis was a pioneer in developing targeted parathyroid surgery under local anesthesia, having started this approach in the 1980’s before surgeons in the United States and elsewhere in the world.
An international authority in the field of minimally invasive endocrine surgery, Dr Inabnet has pioneered new techniques in minimal access endocrine neck surgery as well as adrenal and pancreatic surgery. In 1998, he helped perform the first endoscopic thyroid resection in the United States and has helped advance the field of video-endoscopic neck surgery. Dr Inabnet is a leader in the field of minimally invasive metabolic surgery; he has a keen interest in disorders of the endocrine system in obese patients, especially type 2 diabetes and endocrine malignancy. Dr Inabnet has participated in national and international clinical trials evaluating the role of gastrointestinal surgery in treating type 2 diabetes. He holds numerous leadership positions in the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, American Association of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the American College of Surgeons and the American Thyroid Association.
More recently Dr Inabnet has become very involved with national quality initiatives. He actively participated in the creation and roll out of the new American College of Surgeons accreditation and quality improvement program for bariatric surgery. Dr Inabnet is the architect and founding director of the Collaborative Endocrine Surgery Quality Improvement Program (CESQIP), a national quality initiative overseen by the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons that allows endocrine surgeons to monitor outcomes, practice patterns and resource utilization in the field of endocrine surgery.
Dr Inabnet has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, as well as 5 textbooks. He lectures throughout the world and has been inducted into numerous organizations including the Southern Surgical Association, the American Surgical Association, the Brazilian College of Surgeons (Honorary member) and French National Academy of Surgery, a rare honor for non-French surgeons.
Dr Inabnet is a triathlete, youth soccer coach and referee, and an avid outdoorsman, managing to balance work responsibilities with family time. Other interests include music, sailing, skiing and fishing.View CV/Resume
